[computer-tech-support: 7716] Re: virus programs

I choose Avast over AVG, as AVG will try to get you to install its
firewall program as part of its Internet Security trial version, which
will work for 30 days before you have to pay to register the program.
Avast, on the other hand, just installs the antivirus program, and has
an upgrade option embedded non-intrusively in its user interface. As
for firewalls, the Windows Vista Firewall works well for me. It's
simple, it's non-intrusive, and, despite what everybody else thinks
about it, it works.

When I found Avast, I was using AVG when a virus slipped through AVG's
fingertips and almost took out half my system, which, I am happy to
say, is a Dell Dimension C521 that has been in service for over three
years, has only failed twice only to successfully recover both times,
and runs Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit edition with Service Pack 2.
I fired AVG in favor of Avast, and have used Avast ever since. At the
time I discovered Avast, I had not even heard of Avira, and even if I
had, Avira was not rated as highly as Avast.

In fact, if you would be so kind as to check http://download.cnet.com/windows/antivirus-software,
filter by "License Type: Free," and sort by Editors' Rating, you'll
find that there are four free antivirus programs that have the
editors' highest five-star rating among such software. Of those four,
compare the users' star ratings for each program and decide for
yourself. (I found that Avast has a higher user rating than AVG, which
is why I picked Avast when I dumped AVG.)
