5 Amazing Linux Games You Can Enjoy Posted: 03 Jan 2011 06:04 PM PST It is no secret that Linux is not a popular gaming platform. Despite that stigma, however, the open nature of Linux makes it easy, even for relatively inexperienced developers, to produce quality games. Therefore, while the number of high-rated Linux game titles may be small in comparison to Windows or gaming consoles, there are a number of quality free and commercial games out there. Most of the Linux sites that list games tend to highlight the same bunch; however, there are a few hidden gems that you may have missed but are still worth playing. In no particular order, here are few games you might want to try. Secret Maryo Chronicles is an open source PC game designed around the original Super Mario World side scroller that takes what was great about that old console game and brings it to the PC, dusts it off and tries to improve on it. While still not completely polished or fully matured, it does offer you a lot of gaming fun including mushrooms, fire flowers, pipes and much more. This game is a puzzle game which is basically run and jump that involves pressing some switches which rotate the world means the entire field of play is rotated 90 degrees. It is quite fun to play with a few enemies and obstacles and free to download from synaptic package manager or Ubuntu software centre. IceBreaker is an action-puzzle game in which you must capture penguins from an Antarctic iceberg so they can be shipped to Finland, where they are essential to a secret plot for world domination. To earn the highest Geek Cred, trap them in the smallest space in the shortest time while losing the fewest lives. IceBreaker was inspired by (but isn't an exact clone of) Jezzball by Dima Pavlovsky. Numpty Physics is a really nice game. It is recommended especially for children, although adults can have hours of blasting fun. It teaches you about gravity. The game screen in an interactive panel where you construct all kinds of devices, like ramps, bridges, pulleys, etc, and then use gravity to create motion. The goal is to make your ball (a red thing) hit a star (a yellow thing). Frozen Bubble is an easy and fun arcade game with a simple premise: shoot colors bubbles onto the game board in an attempt to match up three or more similarly colored bubbles. Doing so will cause them to fall from the board, taking connected bubbles with them. If you clear all of the bubbles, you move on to the next level. If the bubbles pile up and cover the entire screen, you lose the game and restart the entire level. |
