Web App Store and Platform for Firefox and Google Chrome Goes Live From Mozilla

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 11:04 AM PST

Delivering on its word to achieve an open wed application infrastructure Mozilla debuts the Web Apps technology, app stores, management tools and the APIs for the apps.
Mozilla launches the "ready to use" API (application programming interface) to be used in making the apps for Firefox and Chrome for now and other browsers later. "We are excited to announce the availability of the first milestone release of Mozilla's Web Application project. Web Apps are applications that run on any device, and can be distributed through any store or directly by the developer," states Ragavan Srinivasan from Mozilla.

The first edition of the yet to be perfected releases covers almost all the audience, from the casual user to the utmost developer. Casual users can mingle with it and learn the basic working of the apps as well as their motive and achieve a clearer picture of the app's mechanism.
"This release contains stable APIs, developer utilities and documentation to help you get a jump start on building Web Apps and stores," Srinivasan adds.
Developers can get into action right away as the application programming interfaces for both the web apps and web stores are considered stable and ready to use. For anyone who has some experience with HTML5 and related technologies the development of web apps is relatively easy, and then only the hassle of packaging and perfecting the browser integration remains.
One of the advantages of the web apps is that they can be integrated with any modern browser, but for the time being only Firefox and chrome are supported. Mozilla is looking forward to expand to other browsers as well.
Mozilla has made add-ons for both the browsers to manage the installed applications, which makes it easier to install and use the already available web apps at the Mozilla's official portal.
