  1. DIY Web Interface Control System for Central Heating and Hot Water! - 2011-06-14 23:35:00-04

In the near future, you should be able to control all of your house heating system and even hot water via a web interface.  But for those of you who don’t want to wait for that, you can make your own like Nicholas did, a DIY web interface control system for your central heating and hot water made possible by a linux box and some relays. via hackedgadgets This post DIY Web Interface Control System for Central Heating and Hot Water! was originally from zedomax.com central heating, Circuits, Computer, control system, DIY, diy web interface, Featured, Featured DIYs, Featured Gadgets, Featured Hacks, Gadgets, Hack, Home, hot water, Household, HOWTO, Linux, Projects

  2. DIY Android WiFi Controlled RC Car! - 2011-06-15 07:20:15-04

Here’s a cool implementation of Android smartphone controlling an RC car via WiFi.  I know there’s a bunch of ways to use Arduino with Android but this is an example that there’s no limits to what you can do with an Android device and your brain. The RC car (battery powered) is completely controlled by Flyport. The module manages Wi-Fi link to an Android Smartphone and it drives the servo motors (PWM signal). On the following video you see the Android phone internal accelerometers drive directly the RC Car. via hackedgadgets, Project Page This post DIY Android WiFi Controlled RC Car! was originally from zedomax.com Circuits, diy android, Featured, Featured DIYs, Featured Gadgets, Featured Hacks, Gadgets, Google Android, RC, rc-car, Smartphones, wifi controlled

  3. How to Forge Your Own DIY Sword from Scratch! - 2011-06-15 07:56:50-04

Using some incredible creativity and DIY improvisations, Jesus Hernandez forges his own sword from scratch, starting with making his own steel-forging equipment to experimenting with various different methods to make a Japanese short sword.   The best part?  Jesus did take some detailed photographs and left a long 6-part journal so you can forge your own sword from scratch. (Yes, it was that interesting, I read it all!) "From Dust to Edge" is the documentation of a long journey in the efforts of making a blade out of homemade steel. My interest in blades started with the legendary Japanese katana and as a result of wanting to learn more about how they were made I ended up becoming a bladesmith. I combined the traditional Japanese techniques and the current knowledge of the Western smith in this pictorial representation. The project will be divided in several sections. It is primarily a visual description through photographs. via make This post How to Forge Your Own DIY Sword from Scratch! was originally from zedomax.com DIY, Featured, Featured DIYs, Featured Hacks, forge, Hack, how-to, HOWTO, Projects, scratch, sword

  4. American Airlines Adding Galaxy Tab 10.1 Tablets to First Class! - 2011-06-15 13:28:23-04

Want to test drive out the new Galaxy Tab 10.1?  If you fly first class on American Airlines often, you should be expecting to get a chance to demo these units as American Airlines will be experimenting with customer satisfaction by giving their first class passengers the new tablet devices. American Airlines is starting to offer Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 units to its first class passengers as an entertainment option during several flights, Mashable is reporting. Apparently the tablet will be an option on flights between Los Angeles and New York, San Francisco and New York, Los Angeles and Miami, Boston and Los Angeles flights operated by 757s, and a few European and South American flights operated by American Airlines' 767-300 aircraft. 6,000 tablets are being deployed in total, and American Airlines will offer passengers access to Wi-Fi during the trip. via bgr, mashable This post American Airlines Adding Galaxy Tab 10.1 Tablets to First Class! was originally from zedomax.com american-airlines, Android Tablet, Featured Gadgets, first-class, Flying, Gadgets, Galaxy Tab 10.1, galaxy tab 10.1, News, tablets, Tablets, Travel

  5. Does the Moon Pull the Water From the Ocean? - 2011-06-15 15:08:31-04

I got up at 4AM today and found the beautiful full moon setting, do they call that “moonset”? Well, that got me thinking about how the ocean tide works and me questioning myself, “does the moon pull water from the ocean?” or is it the other way around? I know moon has some gravitational/magnetic pull on earth but is that strong (stronger than the sun) enough to pull waters? Or the sun doesn’t have much magnetic pull because it’s much farther away from the earth than moon? I decided to do some research so my brain gets smarter. According to Wikipedia, distance from earth to moon: The distance between the moon and the Earth varies from around 356,400 km to 406,700 km at the extreme perigees (closest) and apogees (farthest). and distance from earth to sun: An astronomical unit (abbreviated as AU, au, a.u., or ua.) is a unit of length equal to about 149,597,870.7-kilometre (92,955,807.3 mi)[1] or approximately the mean Earth–Sun distance. That means roughly sun’s about 357 times farther away from earth than moon. Okay, call me dumb but it seems like I’ve revisited my quantum physics lessons again, everything in our universe exerts some kind of force … Continue reading

  6. Wireless LED Floodlight Review! - 2011-06-15 15:28:35-04

Recently, I’ve been looking for floodlight replacement for my house because the old one was breaking and didn’t work all that well. Well, I went to Home Depot and they had a bunch of them but they all cost like over $100 plus you needed to wire them directly to your home’s AC power. After doing some more research with solar LED lights and other floodlights, I found this great little wireless LED floodlight that runs on three D batteries and with a motion sensor that only works at night (so it does’t drain battery when not needed). This is the most perfect solution for floodlights and I’ve seen a bunch of over-priced solar LED outdoor lights that are simply not bright enough. These LED floodlights feature motion sensors that only work at night, meaning your batteries will last at least a year or more.  I like smart devices like this and the price is right too at around $22 on Amazon. The battery is really easy to change to, a plus. Overall, I am happy with this purchase and it’s super bright, highly recommended buy. 8. How to Make a Solar Charged Kobo eReader! - 2011-06-16 04:57:00-04

Do you have an eReader such as a Kobo or a Kindle that you read often under the sunlight, perhaps at the beach on your smoke breaks? If so, you might be interested in turning some of that UV rays into charging your eReader as one user did with his Kobo eReader, attaching a 80mA output solar cells to the back of the unit. Although most eReaders do have good battery life but this could be a good application to refer if you have similar projects. via hackaday This post How to Make a Solar Charged Kobo eReader! was originally from zedomax.com DIY, Earth, Energy, eReader, Featured, Featured DIYs, Featured Earth, Featured Gadgets, Featured Hacks, Gadgets, Hack, how-to, HOWTO, kobo, make, Projects, Solar, solar ereader

  9. How to get 300Mbps Connection on Wireless N Dual-Band Router! - 2011-06-16 16:50:28-04

I’ve recently bought a new Linksys E4200 Wireless N dual-band router that works on dual-band, 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz (which is a really great router btw, highly recommended). Well, I’ve connected my main desktop via Wireless N to my new router but my Windows 7 indicates that I am only connected at 130Mbps. To see your Wireless connection speed on Windows, right click on your wireless bar: Then click on “Status”: I was furious, why am I not getting the full 300Mbps?!? It’s in the settings. After playing around a bit, I found that if you don’t set different SSID for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, your overall connections suffer because Wireless B/G/N all get mixed into the same SSID. Instead, I gave a new SSID name for my 5Ghz band and also put only Wireless N on 5GHz. The result? I am getting full 300Mbps connections for all my wireless N connections. Yippey, my internet is faster now without being slowed by all my other B/G devices. Here’s a screenshot of my settings: What’s amazing is that this simple setting can cost you more than half of your potential of your router and it’s not clearly set in the instruction manuals. But … Continue reading
