Mac’s Targeted As Market Share Increases

Posted: 10 Jun 2011 06:24 PM PDT

Whether it's through the myriad commercials that flood the worldwide data stream or from online market research surveys, we're all aware that Apple has done quite well for itself in recent years but this might have adverse affects for its users. For decades now, as any PC owner will tell you, it's a constant battle keeping your computer safe from viruses and malware attacks but, until now, Apple products have been relatively safe. At least until now.

Apple released a statement recently, as was reported by NPR, saying that Mac computers have been targeted with different types of malicious software. Up until this point Mac's have had a relatively easy time when it comes to viruses. It wasn't as if somehow Mac's were immune to viruses. It's just that they flew under the radar but as Mac computers and other Apple products gain an increasingly larger share of the computer market, they're now getting the attention of many malicious programming.

The issue that Mac's are having currently has garnered a lot of attention, as Steve Jobs and his colleagues got ready to address the public at a developer's conference. They wanted to discuss ways in which they could combat, what the industry calls "phishing" programs. The malware that's been hitting Mac's is something that most PC owners are already familiar with. An average user, when interfacing with an infected site, is confronted with a pop up window that informs the user that their computer has been infected. The user is then prompted to enter their credit card number in order to pay to remove the virus. This message is in fact, the malware. The credit card is then used for various nefarious purposes. Most PC, and Mac users alike, are already familiar with this scam but just enough people have been scammed that it's getting Apple's attention.

This has many in the Mac world concerned because all Apple products, the iPad and iPhone alike, all run on the same core operating system. It's likely that other web based mobile devices could fall victim to this same ploy. This has Apple scrambling to find ways to safeguard their company against this newfound targeting of its systems. Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to unveil the company's newest operating system, Lion, and iOS 5 for its mobile devices. It's expected that there will be new implements in these operating systems to combat these issues but one thing is for certain, Apple is now a target.

Some say that this has just been a long time coming. Until now Apple has been able to fly under the radar. Technology columnist Rich Jaroslovsky of Bloomberg news stated, "In some ways, it's almost a rite of passage for the Mac" he says, "because it says that it's now mainstream enough so that the bad guys are targeting it." It appears that with fame comes attention and not all of it is good attention. Mac users will likely, in the coming years, become familiar with combating daily virus attacks just as PC users have been doing for years.
