Posted: 10 Aug 2011 08:53 AM PDT Unless you live somewhere that technology and computers don't exist, then you're already familiar with iTunes. This has been the long-time and undisputed leader amongst music management software. Most people really don't care what they use and the most popular will usually win out, but not everyone likes to use iTunes. People seem to forget that there are other options out there and you don't have to automatically look to iTunes as the only choice you have available. In fact, there's a lot of management programs that are comparable to iTunes with other benefits that you won't see in the top ranking – music software giant: Media Monkey This program is built to primarily deal with very large music collections. You can do all of the same things that you can do with iTunes, but it also allows users greater control over the management of their music. This doesn't mean that you have to go into each file and name and categorize it, MediaMonkey will do much of this for you automatically. With this program you can manipulate all of your audio files even if they aren't in mp3 format. The program, in fact, will work with almost any music file, which is a big plus over iTunes' restrictive approach. SharePod The iTunes software has very strict licensing practices and SharePod is for anyone who lacks administrative rights to music on the web or from your computer. You can still use your iPod and connect with another computer and you're not going to lose all of your music. This is a big knock against the iPod because you're tied to a single computer. Apple wants to keep it that way and with SharePod this isn't an issue. The program launches directly from your iPod and you can copy any songs or media files to another computer. This program also allows for basic file management and isn't as intricate as other programs, but what it lacks in ability it makes up for in user freedom. Foobar2000 This is a simple approach to music management and you can handle any large or small scale collection with variable ease. It does many of the same things that you can do with iTunes, but it's incredibly customizable. It's compatible with iTunes and will work with an iPod or other devices, but also works with other music files. It's one of the best alternatives that are out there. For most, many of these issues aren't really that big of a deal, but just because iTunes is the most popular doesn't mean it's the best. The same goes for the iPhone. People buy it because it has the market's attention but devices like the 4G Slide Android Phone offer users the same quality experience while giving them greater control of how they use the device. If you don't like the restrictive approach Apple takes towards the people that use their software and devices, realize that you don't have to suffer with it. Any of these programs work just as well while giving you the option to manipulate the settings and flow. This is important for some people who don't fit into one specific way of doing things, so check it out if you're interested in making a switch. |
