Try doing the following
1. boot into a linux distro and try mounting the flash drive.
if successful, bingo recover data & format
2. try apps such as this one (http://www.eprovided.com/usb-unknown-
device-recognized-windows.html).
They might just help! but also check for malware injections ;(
