How To Fix Errors and Format USB Flash Drives Posted: 05 Dec 2011 11:32 PM PST USB flash drives, pen drives, memory drives are a great way of storing your important data and transferring it. But if you think that these drives are totally secure and your data cannot be lost, then you are very wrong. These drives do get corrupted, and sometimes your data is even lost forever, which is obviously something which you don't want. Sometimes files also do not open from a drive. This happens due to some error that had occurred during transfer or storage. Tips to fix and format your USB Flash Drives An important precaution is to never remove the pen drive when the data is being transferred. Always remember to stop the pen drive first before removing it. Head over to the 'Safely remove hardware' (green arrow icon at bottom right corner), then stop the usb drive and then when it says it is safe to remove it, remove it. This is the right way and it will save you from many errors. Always remember to check important files before going to a presentation. If the files open, they will most probably open at the presentation too. It is always great to be sure your files would work at the required time. If any file does not work, then try transfering another copy of the file with a renamed version. It might solve the problem. Deleting it or retransfering the same file with the same name and size will probably get it written to the same area. This thing will not let it work. Another fil with a different name will get written at some other place. So this can make it work. It is always better to have 2 copies of your file anyway. If you plan on running your presentation on older computers (such as Windows 98), then always remember to carry the drivers CD that will let such PCs to recognize your plug and play usb drive. Always carry this CD with yourself, as you never know when you would have to use an older computer. If your flash drive data still gets corrupted If your flash drive data still gets corrupted then a wise thing to do is the following: Head over to My Computer, then right click the Removable drive, Go to Properties >Tools. Fix errors by running Error Checking and Scanning for errors and then by fixing them. The already corrupted files will not work but the new files should work. If everything fails, then format your drive. If nothing works, then formatting your drive is the smartest thing. Doing this will delete all the data from it and make it fresh as new; and hopefully remove all errors. This formatting software comes on the CD or is available on support websites for your branded usb drive. But sometimes when you run the formatting software, it would say the USB drive is not connected! How to then format your flash drive? Simply right click removable drive and choose and format the drive. Followed by scanning and fixing all errors. This should fix all the errors and your drive should become new and work well. In the File System drop down, you would see FAT and FAT32. Which one should you choose? If you right click Removable Drive > Properties The General Properties of the USB drive shows that it is FAT, so simply use FAT in the format utility. Then choose "Quick Format" and "Start"; this would delete all data and hopefully all errors would be taken care of. If none of the above mentioned tips work, then get the warranty and take it to customer support to get if fixed. If nothing works, then the only option left is to get a new high memory storage USB drive! WARNING: Please try these tips at YOUR OWN RISK. I take no responsibility and there is no guarantee that these tips would work. It is always advised to get professional support from the manufacturer. |
