About the campus you mentioned, i'd say they probably have several access points distributed around the place, that's how they get the signal to further places.
And about the N wireless, i didn't know how far it could go, but i hope they work out for you if you decide to try it out.

Also... Are you using the original Linksys firmware, or are you using
DD-WRT firmware (go to http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database
)?
The DD-WRT firmware will allow you to boost the output signal and
you can maybe start getting a good/constant signal.
