First of all i assume it's the gmail account since you mentioned the 'still working' message, so sometimes it's just the browser's problem, like if you have few ram left like how firefox keeps eating more and more ram when you keep using it for long and then when you try to do something sometimes the page keeps loading forever and nothing really happens, usually just restarting the browser solves the problem.
I also think it might be the flash plugin problem sometimes, because google's standard view uses a flash file for bulk uploading, if this problem keeps happening more often, u could try to disable the flash uploader from the settings menu, or try using the basic html view for emergencys.
And I don't really think it's an internet speed problem, the file is just 51k even a 56k modem shouldn't take so long.
