[computer-tech-support: 8304] Trouble renaming media files

i have windows home installed on my home pc, and lately when i try to
rename media files like music and movies it corrupts them, in such a
way that no media player can play them; except for VLC media player.
what could be causing this, and how can i fix it and prevent it from
happening again?
