[computer-tech-support: 8377] networking a laptop and a pc

hi guys. my little brother uses a laptop using windows7, and i use a
pc using windows XP home edition. there are some large files that are
more than 8G in size that i would like to get from his laptop, so i
bought a crossover cable, and when i connect it nothing happens,
there is a message about an error, when i click on "fix problem" it
shows refreshing I.P Address.
all in all i would like help on how to setup this network, if that is
what it needs.
