if you are using a network cable directly between the two computers, i usually prefer to do the ip's by my self, just put the same subnet mask in the both computers, like give the first computer 192.168.1.1 and the second 192.168.1.2 and ignore the rest of the options, choose a home network if it asks you what type of network you need, so that it enables sharing, then you should fix the sharing options on the windows 7 computer, allow users to access shared folders without login, or just use the windows 7 username and password when it asks for it on the windows xp computer.
when you are done with everything, dont forget to return the ip options to auto otherwise it wont be able to see the internet on any network.
