If you could please relay the model of your motherboard to verify, but it sounds like it will only run in dual channel mode, you must have all slots filled up with matching ram in each set for the memory to work correctly.

If you wanted 12GB you would need 4GBx2 and 2GBx2, or just get another 4GB stick and have 16GB
